Silverstone 27th - 28th Sept 675 Triumph weekend

Silverstone 27th-28th September

Hi Guy's, just a quick report on how my last meeting went when Flitwick Motorcycles/Wheeler electrical offered me a ride on their 675 Triumph for the weekend.

 Friday Free Practice

1st times that iv ever ridden the bike, but Ollie Linsdell (the last rider to race it) had left it on Metzelers and the series run on Micheline Pilot Race but to save a bit of dough i went out on the Metz as only free practice.

From the off i got my head down, the bike seemed good and stable but i felt it needed a stiffer front end so came in 2/3rds of the way through to stiffen up front the forks a touch and harden the rear rebound, bike was good and after the session finished i was 5th quickest overall posting a 1min 35.4

My impression of the bike was positive, not much top end but plenty of drive, bit sluggish on turning in but we were only learning.

 Sat.

Qual 1.

We placed the bike on the Michelin's and went out at 12.30 after the SS600 qual, weather was good as was track conditions.

After bedding in the tyres i started to up the pace but to my annoyance the bike with michelin's was not stable and i nearly fell at bridge, on about lap 6 i started to ride better but in my final section the red flags came out for a faller. The session was stopped for 5 mins and i went out at the back looking for clear track, the forks felt too hard and the front was negative so i tried my best but came in 11th posting a 1min 37.1 which basically was shit.

 Qual 2.

We reverted back to Olli's setting for qual 2  and after a few laps i started chasing a pack who were circulating in the low 36, i posted on lap 7 a 1min 35.4 which placed me 6th only to get knocked back to 9th on the last few laps when a misting visor slowed me.

 Sunday Race 1.

I lined up leading the 3rd row and as this round was at BSB in front of a packed crowd i knew i needed a good run, i held my own at the start and was in 9th place for the first 3 laps when i started to catch a blue Triumph and overtook into Abbey Corner. I was then basically on the back of a big snake to the lead in 8th, the leader then crashed and i managed to overtake another rider on the last lap whilst getting embroiled in a battle with TDG Champion Jack Sim.

Jack was riding real loose and i did wonder if he was gonna make it but he pipped me for 5th and i came in 6th which was 3rd place in the TDG cup (Over 25yrs race).

After a quick visit to the podium and a trophy it was back to waiting another 4 hours for race 2.

Race 2.

Loz my pit bitch stuck in a fresh front hoop for race 2 and i felt a little bit more on it for this race, i missed out a win in the TDG Cup race from Mark Cheetham by just over a 2nd and i badly wanted to beat Jack Sim.

I got another o.k. start and was 8th on the 1st lap, this remained pretty stagnant until lap 4 when i upped the pace and passed Sim and couple more lads as i was moving towards the front.

On lap 5 i passed race 1 winner John Simpson and caught up with Mark Cheetham but also i started to get spots of rain on my visor, i pushed on harder as i felt this rain was psychological and passed Cheetham on the start & finish straight setting the overall fastest lap.

Going into Abbey i had caught the leading 3 as into the corner and to my surprise all 3 fell off, i then had a whopping front end slide but made it round, the red flags were duly waved the rain had started and the end of the race was declared.

I was awarded 2nd overall and 2nd in the TDG cup.

Review.

Well mega meeting and my race pace was definitely back, many thanks must go to Flitwick M/C, Pli Consultants, Graham at GLF, HJC Lids , Held and Wheeler Electrical.

Also thanks to Loz-loads ,Dad,Steve,Kellie and Sharpy for the pit work and Signals.

Triumph, could be a good thing for next year watch this space!

Oulton Park 16th Aug

Hi Guy's

Quick race report on how to race a Yamaha R6 in a week from first test to result and how to do it the hard way!

Received a borrowed race bike courtesy of Pete Lawrence Plant Hire (Watford) that has stood in his garage for 6months after his son declared it unfit to race (It had handling issues) end of last year.

Forks were then revalved at Ohlins K Tech and Pete wanted me to set it up and try a race on it if i wanted.

Monday Week

Took bike to Cadwell to instruct at the No Limits Track Day were we got Colin at 100% Suspension also to help us, massively overdamped, calmed everything down bike started to go well.

Called Bemsee was told that Oulton Park meeting was on Fri-Sat, could not got time off work so would miss qualifying so i'd be placed on back row of the grid(40)

 Thursday

Loz found that air gap in forks set wrong so adjusted.

 Saturday

Got to Oulton my mate Nick Chadwick had saved us some space so all was well.

I had a 10 minute warm up which i spent duking it out with some Triumph cup riders and again Yamaha R6 was not handling the best.

 RACE 1

After softning rear and front suspension was ready for the race, was last on the grid (40) but was willing to try bike and see what it was like.

I got an average start as not used to the clutch but was soon making my way upfield, by lap 3 i had passed about 15 riders and got into a dice with a blue CRB6 and an R6, we battled away and the CBR6 was holding me up but his bike had enormous top end power and the Black R6 was a bit nuts slowing us all down.

On lap 6 there was a big accident out of Cascades which brought out the red flags. I finished 23rd which i was obviously a bit miffed about but took it on the chin as such a new bike.

 Race 2.

We again softened the rear shock/forks even preload to try and gain some feel from the bike , the problem is that on my own i can lap quick (over 1/2 a sec quicker in race 1 then the two in front) but bike does not give me confidence on hard braking points.

Back on row 8(40) this time i got my shit together much earlier and managed some good overtakes very early, i decided not to run a pit board as it was head down arse up when your that far behind.

By lap 4 i was chasing matey on the CBR6 but we had both uped the pace lappping 1 second quicker than Race 1,the Yamaha was handling better and also i was getting used to it's quirks.

By lap 4 i was embroiled in a massive battle for 13th place and i twice nearly spanked into my competitor (CBR) trying overtakes the problem was his bike was very quick and he rode it decently.

On the last lap an R6 made a mistake going into Hizzy chicane and we both capatalised, then into Druids i tried to ride around the outside of the Cbr only to get onto the Rumble Strip so could not overtake into Lodge.

I finished 14th which was 2 MRO S600 points which considering the handicap we put ourselves under was  fair achievement, i made myself a benchmark to see how far i was behind a compatriate (Pat Sheriden) who was about 10 secs in front in 7th place lapping about 0.7 secs better than my best lap.

My fastest lap time would have put me in 11th so some credit was taken away from the meeting, and i hope to ride the bike again this year if Pete wil let me.

 Thanks go to

Loz for spannering, No Limits, Held(GLF) & PLI.

Special thanks go to Pete Lawrence Plant Hire for the loan of the bike.

Snetterton 21st - 22nd June Derby Phoenix Club

Hi Guy's and girls just a quick update on how we went, still can't find any pictures from the weekend but Richard may download some from his camera that he took at Russells.

 Race 1

Practice was dry with misty rain so we had Pirelli Diablo's on but for race 1 it pissed down so wets where the order of the day.

As I've not done any racing with this club i was placed 31st on the grid so had a lot to do, also to add pressure Gavin came down to look at purchasing the bike so no pressure eh!

I got a fairly good start and went for the inside line into Ritchies , the traffic and spay were unbelievable but the first lap was full of late breaking nobby wet riders so i took it easy and scythed thru the pack, on lap 1 i passed the start and finish in 12th and carried on picking riders off every lap/corner.

On lap 6 of eight i passed a black R1 who i accidentally clipped so apologies for that one and managed to pass Liam Marchant on his very trick R1 on lap 7 and another 2 guy's on the last lap.

I came in 4th (2nd quickest lap) but the top3 who had started on row 1 were miles away so felt pretty pleased as i felt i never took any risks either, just plonked around.

Race 2.

This was better, front row start but weather and conditions very iffy. In the meantime Gavin had decided to buy bike as long as i didn't smash it up so again no pressure eh!

I decided as very drying-ish line that wet front and inter rear was good to go but got a bit duffed up at the start and entered Ritchies in 7th position, i made up a few places and got into a groove in 4th place. The leaders were trying really hard so i left them to it as they were on a win and bin mission in my book. On the penultimate lap the leader binned it real quick and i inherited 3rd but had someone tryin to steal that off me, so on the last lap 2 corners from home (Corams) i made a brave move round a back-marker and consolidated the 3rd position.

Good stuff all round for that ride we (loz Jinks and I) made a good tyre choice and i was happy with my trophy.

 Sunday Race 1.

I was more up for this as weather now blustery and dry.

I got a good start from 3rd and was into 2nd place by the end of the Revitt straight, i was being towed round by Club Champion Daz Bellworthy and we spent the next 4 laps nose to tail pushing away from 3rd place.  I was in my comfort zone and felt i could win but on lap 6 of 10 my quick-shifter started playing up a little and i had to nurse the bike round to finish 2nd.

That was real shame but again pleased with another trophy and then i called it a day as the bike was now due to be sold in the week so i took the sensible option and put it in the van.

Thanks go to sponsors PLI and No Limits, Pretech brakes were excellent again and Loz, Rich and the two littl-uns spurred me on.

A little mention must go to Paul Jinks of Trickbits, cheers for the power/awning, you came through when others purposely didn't!

Next up, well I'll tell you what happens when it runs right and we have a successful test.

Bye Bye 10R you were great till the end, we'll miss ya!

PS Gavin Littlewood do her proud man!

Brands Hatch (Indy) 18th May 2008

Well Well about time i got my racing head on eh!

We should have started at the Derby Phoenix round late March but the engine was not ready, then we entered the April Bemsee 400cc race at Cadwell late April, tested the RGV the Tuesday before and it seized and no powerbike race either so could not even get on the old ZX10R.

Well i had entered the Brands meeting to help me adjust to ride the Suzuki but the engine could not be turned round in time so we got the Kawasaki quickly prepped and ready for it.

I had been busy doing instructs for No Limits already this year but was not that confident as you tend to only ride at 90% when training.

Brands Hatch.

I came down the night before with mechanic Loz, pit girl Tweek also turned up to enjoy are male dominated banter all night.
My thoughts about the this meeting is that it would get me nicely up to race pace and if i finished top 5 or maybe a trophy I'd be happy.

Qualifying

We changed to Brands gearing and i went out at the front and was not headed, i slowed a little which allowed Michael Blanks to pass me and i tailed him, he was going well and we got down to a 50.1 which is a fair pace, i was using Metzeler Racetechs for the 1st time but was not too happy with the front end feeling. We finished qualifying and i was pleased to see that i placed it on the front row in 4th. Pole was only 0.2 secs in front of me which was pleasing but i new i needed to raise my game to get a pot.

Race 1

I got a great start and was quickly challenging for the lead against Michael Blanks, his lines were not so clean and i passed him on lap 4 to lead, once out in front i put some decent laps together until Doug Johnson tried a wild old pass into Druids, he went wide so i ducked under not to be headed and to take the win by a second.

Well what a start, before race 1 i had changed the front to a Bridgestone slick (soft) and it gave me the confidence to push.

Race 2

I decided to place another click on the rebound and compression on the front forks before going out, other than that we fuelled it and checked it over.

The start was just plain weird, Rob Frost kinda jumped it, the whole row except me moved forward and they still let us go! I arrived into Paddock Hill not happy in about 7th and pushed thru to 4th on lap 3. By lap 7 i managed to get into 2nd place but Blanksy had a gap which i closed but he won it fair and square, the last corner was interesting as i got baulked by a backmarker and Doug Johnson tried his luck, but face it mate you got beat as i was not gonna give 2nd up after trying so hard, close but we did not touch!
I placed my fastest lap a 49.2 which was pleasing.

Race 3.(The Brands Allcomer Trophy)

This was mega, the New Era staff placed me 23rd on the grid with a plethora of Novice's and twins in front, on the G of green i went and managed to go into Paddock Hill about 10th, then 5th into or around Druids then 2nd into Graham Hill, by the time i looked up Garry Smith was about 2 secs in the lead on his Ducati, i managed to get into the lead on lap 5 and was pressured by Garry to about lap 11 of 15. The noisy Ducati drone quietened and i picked my way thru the backmarkers to win by 4secs. Jeez what a race , i was pretty tired, i even lapped some poor fella twice + half the field was 1 lap down.

Review.

Much better than expected and it was nice to win for wrench and pit girl, Loz and Tweek (Love ya both)
Richard (web-lord)+ saucepans Tristan and Sophie, Chris (PLI) both turned up so a happy atmosphere it was in my mega awning.
We should be back on the smoker for the next round so a big thanks to all the supporters and sponsors & family.

Oh and Breadknife was pleased, she thought now were married i might have slowed down :)
